“I prefer keeping in mind even the possibility that existence has its own reason for being.”

Lauren grit her teeth, trying to ignore Artemis. Of catastrophic darkness, she could see eyes watching her in motion. She sank into internal refuge as the shadows held the branches above them.

“Is there any reason we should exist on this island?” Lauren trudged against the cat-like mutant, much to Tom’s dismay. So much for quietude amid this lover’s quarrel. “Any reason we had to go through what many could not survive? All the people that had to die, that we have literal blood on our hands; I still had to wash it ou—”

“Lauren. Stop.” Tom implored. “This isn’t the time.”

“Then when the fuck is it?”

Artemis stared solemnly back to the moon as she sighed. “When we put survival behind us. Let’s head back.”

Written for the dVerse prosery prompt 3/16/2021: Write a piece of flash fiction or other prose of up to or exactly 144 words, including the given line: “I prefer keeping in mind even the possibility that existence has its own reason for being.”

I have included the three characters I created in an ongoing novel collaboration, and I suppose it’s a semi-sequel to The Island flash fiction piece.

I hope you could enjoy this one.

  1. I love the setting, Lucy, with the eyes watching in motion and the shadows holding the branches, a surreal sci-fi landscape. I also like the fact that they are trying to survive on an island after what seems like Armageddon, with a cat-like mutant!

    1. Hahaha, thank you Tricia! I’m glad you picked up on that—she is more logical than emotional/vulnerable so that definitely can cause some problems! 😁 Thank you for reading.

  2. Love this Lucy! Yes, when the fuck is the right time? All this shit we been through, and this half-assed, inconsistent, ineffective way we been dealin’ with it as a herd. Crazy little groups, runnin’ this way and that, shoutin’ “fuck you!” over their shoulders at the other of the groups — and noneof’em really got s handle on it sll. I am * burnin’ bob * and I am kept down by rob kistner most of the time, told to shut up and be polite, but I’m gonna bust out again, every now and then — ‘cause I been goin’ crazy, layin’ low, hidin’ from the “RONA”. BUT I am fully fuckin’ vaccinated now, so everybody better watch the fuck out! So I warn you Lucy — I really like your writin’ !

  3. I love, love the dystopian touch to this one, Lucy 💝 It feels like humanity is struggling to keep pace with the cosmos. I am reminded of The Hunger Games 😉
