Lauren grit her teeth, trying to ignore Artemis. Of catastrophic darkness, she could see eyes watching her in motion. She sank into internal refuge as the shadows held the branches above them.
“Is there any reason we should exist on this island?” Lauren trudged against the cat-like mutant, much to Tom’s dismay. So much for quietude amid this lover’s quarrel. “Any reason we had to go through what many could not survive? All the people that had to die, that we have literal blood on our hands; I still had to wash it ou—”
“Lauren. Stop.” Tom implored. “This isn’t the time.”
“Then when the fuck is it?”
Artemis stared solemnly back to the moon as she sighed. “When we put survival behind us. Let’s head back.”
